Unipetrol Doprava carried 3m tonnes of goods last year and saw a record-high performance

26-03-2020

Unipetrol Doprava, a part of the international ORLEN Group, again reinforced its position on the Czech and foreign markets last year. Locomotives with the Unipetrol Doprava logo carried more than three million tonnes of products, which is the second-highest volume in its history. The total transport performance exceeded 1,500 000 thousands gross tonne-kilometres.

“With modern, multi-system locomotives and their interoperability, we can also enter the neighbouring countries, thus saving both time and money. Our locomotives are now being deployed in Poland, Germany, and especially in Slovakia where we launched our activities last year with our own licence and staff,” says Jaroslav Dvořák, Executive Director of Unipetrol Doprava. He adds: “Last year, we were pleased mainly by a high increase in performance. The complex performance indicator, including the driven transport distance, climbed to the record-high 1,537 932 thousands gross tonne-kilometres. This shows that our locomotives have been used reasonably and travelled on long routes where railway transport is generally more cost-effective than road transport.”

Unipetrol Doprava has 29 locomotives for local and international transport. In international transport, it sees significant goods exchanges with companies from the international ORLEN Group. As part of defined synergies, the maximum of carriages was performed between intragroup carriers Unipetrol Doprava and ORLEN KolTrans. Unipetrol Doprava also invests tens of millions in safety. It is the first carrier in the Czech Republic to equip its diesel locomotives with state-of-the-art ETCS system. The first of eight locos of the 753.7 range (“Brejlovec”) will get the ETCS this year, and the entire fleet will be equipped by 2022.

“We are considering an ongoing modernisation of our fleet due to positive feedback from our customers and significant improvements in operational reliability. In this respect, modern Vectron locomotives seem to be a good choice in terms of operating expenses, because they can recover electricity and supply it back to the traction system. They consume 50% less energy compared to diesel locomotives,” Jaroslav Dvořák explains.

Unipetrol Doprava is part of the international ORLEN Group. It offers an extensive portfolio of railway services. In addition to the transport of chemical products, it specialises in forwarding, leases of carriages, repair and cleaning work and consulting activities. It is currently one of the most significant rail operators in the Czech Republic.

The Unipetrol Group is the largest refinery and petrochemical company in the Czech Republic. It focuses on crude-oil processing and on the production, distribution and sale of vehicle fuels and petrochemical products – particularly plastics and fertilisers. In all these areas, it belongs among the important players on the Czech and Central European market. The Unipetrol Group encompasses refineries and production plants in Litvínov and Kralupy nad Vltavou, Paramo with its Mogul brand in Pardubice and Kolín, Spolana Neratovice, and two research centres in Litvínov and Brno. Unipetrol also includes a network of Benzina filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. With 416 filling stations, Benzina is the largest chain in the Czech Republic. Unipetrol is one of the largest companies in terms of turnover in the Czech Republic. It earned CZK 129 billion last year and employs more than 4,800 persons. In addition to its business development, Unipetrol is proud to be a socially responsible corporation. Therefore, it pays an equal amount of attention to initiatives which focus on the cultivation and support of sustainable development, education, local communities, and the environment. In 2005, Unipetrol became a member of the ORLEN Group, the largest crude-oil processor in Central Europe.
